Kenneth Branagh's New Film - As You Like It

Ayli_poster_sm

I love Kenneth Branagh's Shakespeare adaptations.  His Hamlet is absolutely genius.  While watching HBO tonight it had a commercial for his new film As You Like It, being broadcast on HBO August 21st.  It is sad that he couldn't get theater distribution in the US, but I'll take it anywhere.  Set during 18th-century Japan, this adaptation looks beautiful. Set your DVRs and enjoy!

Without seeing your post, I placed my order for his Hamlet today. I'm so glad it is finally available on DVD.

This is the first I've heard of "As You Like It" ... i'm already intrigued just looking at the poster/image. Sadly, we don't get HBO. I'll have to find a friend who will record it for me.

Can't wait to see it. Thanks.

So I am curious ... did you end up seeing the Shakespeare movie?

I'd love to read a review.

Me and a friend started watching it. We both have never read or seen the play before and knew nothing about it, so about after a half hour, we were both lost. The acting was good, and the sets were beautiful. I like that Brian Blessed played two roles. But it's on my DVR waiting until I read the play first so I can enjoy it much better. Then I'll be able to provide a better judgement. Overall thought, it seemed like an atypical comedy for Shakespeare, with a bit of darkness to it - but that may have been Branaugh's interpretation. It kinda upset me that I couldn't follow everything, since I haven't had too much trouble w/ previous Branaugh films - but I think I was just too rusty w/ the languague.

Dallas, I can understand what you are saying about having difficulties with language and perhaps a plot you are not entirely familiar with. With Shakespeare, I like to know ahead of time what is supposed to happen so that I can follow and understand better the actual series of events and conversations that takes place.
